The Six Kalimas of Islam

Memorize, recite, and understand the foundational declarations of Islamic faith.

1. Kalima Tayyibah (The Word of Purity)

First Kalima

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللهِ

Transliteration: La ilaha illallahu Muhammadur Rasoolullah.

Meaning: "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah."

2. Kalima Shahadah (The Testimony)

Second Kalima

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Transliteration: Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa Rasooluh.

Meaning: "I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, He is One without partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His servant and Messenger."

3. Kalima Tamjeed (The Glorification)

Third Kalima

سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ

Transliteration: Subhanallahi wal hamdulillahi wa la ilaha illallahu wallahu Akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil 'Aliyyil 'Azeem.

Meaning: "Glory be to Allah and all praise be to Allah. There is no deity but Allah and Allah is the Greatest. There is no power nor strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great."

4. Kalima Tawheed (The Oneness of Allah)

Fourth Kalima

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لَّا يَمُوتُ أَبَدًا أَبَدًا، ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Transliteration: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyi wa yumeetu wa Huwa hayyun la yamootu abadan abada, Dhul Jalali wal Ikram, biyadihil khayru wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadeer.

Meaning: "There is no God but Allah, alone with no partner. To Him belongs the Kingdom and to Him is all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He is Ever-Living, never dying. Owner of Majesty and Honor, in His hand is all good, and He has power over all things."

5. Kalima Astaghfar (Seeking Forgiveness)

Fifth Kalima

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ رَبِّي مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ أَذْنَبْتُهُ عَمْدًا أَوْ خَطَأً، سِرًّا أَوْ عَلَانِيَةً، وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَ الذَّنْبِ الَّذِي أَعْلَمُ وَمِنَ الذَّنْبِ الَّذِي لَا أَعْلَمُ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوبِ وَسَتَّارُ الْعُيُوبِ وَغَفَّارُ الذُّنُوبِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullaha Rabbi min kulli dhambin adhnabtuhu 'amdan aw khata-an, sirran aw 'alaniyatan, wa atoobu ilayhi minadh-dhambil-ladhee a'lamu wa minadh-dhambil-ladhee la a'lam, innaka Anta 'Allamul Ghuyoobi wa Sattarul 'Uyoobi wa Ghaffarudh-Dhunubi wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil 'Aliyyil 'Azeem.

Meaning: "I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, from every sin I committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or openly, and I turn towards Him in repentance. Indeed You are the Knower of the unseen, the Concealer of faults, and the Forgiver of sins."

6. Kalima Radde Kufr (Rejection of Disbelief)

Sixth Kalima

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ شَيْئًا وَّأَنَا أَعْلَمُ بِهِ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ بِهِ، تُبْتُ عَنْهُ وَتَبَرَّأْتُ مِنَ الْكُفْرِ وَالشِّرْكِ وَالْكِذْبِ وَالْغِيْبَةِ وَالْبِدْعَةِ وَالنَّمِيْمَةِ وَالْفَوَاحِشِ وَالْبُهْتَانِ وَالْمَعَاصِيْ كُلِّهَا، وَأَسْلَمْتُ وَأَقُوْلُ: لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a'oodhu bika min an ushrika bika shay'anw-wa ana a'lamu bihi, wa astaghfiruka lima la a'lamu bihi, tubtu 'anhu wa tabarra'tu minal kufri wash-shirki wal kidhbi wal gheebati wal bid'ati wan-nameemati wal fawahishi wal buhtani wal ma'asi kulliha, wa aslamtu wa aqoolu: La ilaha illallahu Muhammadur Rasoolullah.

Meaning: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know. I repent from it, and I dissociate myself from disbelief, polytheism, lies, backbiting, innovation, tale-bearing, lewdness, and all disobedience. I submit to Your will and declare: There is no God but Allah, Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allah."

Before Sleeping

اَللّٰهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوْتُ وَأَحْيَا

Transliteration: Allahumma bismika amootu wa ahya.

Meaning: "O Allah, in Your name I die (sleep) and I live (awake)." [Bukhari]

Upon Waking Up

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُوْرُ

Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahilladhee ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushoor.

Meaning: "All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection." [Bukhari]

Before Eating / Meals

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَعَلَىٰ بَرَكَةِ اللهِ

Transliteration: Bismillahi wa 'ala barakatillah.

Meaning: "In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah (I begin)." [Abu Dawud]

After Finishing Meal

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ

Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahilladhee at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana minal muslimeen.

Meaning: "Praise belongs to Allah who fed us, gave us drink, and made us among the Muslims." [Tirmidhi]

When Leaving the House

بِسْمِ اللهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ

Transliteration: Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallahi wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

Meaning: "In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah; there is no power nor strength except with Allah." [Abu Dawud]

When Entering the Mosque (Masjid)

اَللّٰهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِيْ أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

Transliteration: Allahummaftah lee abwaba rahmatika.

Meaning: "O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy." [Muslim]
